Hey angels! I am so excited to be writing this post because I feel like it couldn’t be better timing. I’m here to answer my most asked question – “How do you balance blogging and school?” I’m currently in my last semester at the University of Minnesota, and I’ve been balancing my blog and classes (~19 credits!) for a year now. And yes, it’s been challenging.
Education Over Blogging
Something I can’t stress enough, is that no matter what, education is always the first priority. Though I’d love to spend all of my time blogging and posting on Instagram, it’s just not realistic while being a full-time student with multiple jobs. With that being said, do not cherish your blog more than your education.
I realize that sounds a bit harsh, but trust me I still love my blog and I put time + effort into it. But some weeks, when I’m ambushed my homework, I won’t post on Instagram daily or publish a blog post. Instead, I take the time to catch up on classes. Knowing and understanding that my education is my top priority has really given me the freedom I need to pursue both my blog and attending school.
Setting A Schedule
I swear, I’m the queen of G-cal, Apple calendar, and a physical planner. I literally use all three consistently and in different ways.
First and foremost, G-cal is my go-to when it comes to scheduling. I love blocking out my classes, work schedule and then seeing how much time I have left for blogging, working out, etc. I actually have multiple calendars that I use – two different ones for my jobs, one for my relationship, and a personal one used for everything I said above.
Clearly, my schedule is absolutely insane (this doesn’t include two online classes I’m enrolled in!). But, I’ve managed to block off time for my blog – which is very important if I want to get anything done. Though I don’t always stick to this exact schedule, I try to hold myself to it. I also leave my weekends open so that I don’t always feel immense pressure.
For my Apple calendar, I typically use that for quick reminders that I get on my phone. For example, I use it for appointments or meetings and set a notification. I don’t use it daily.
My physical planner is my go-to for deadlines, important days and homework that is due. It’s really just used for classes, but I also put in the days that I’m scheduling blog posts and my goals for the month.
I know this is a bit excessive, but it’s a system that works for me. Whether this is something you want to try or not, find what works for you and stick with it. I promise you’ll be much more productive and happy!
Plan Your Content
This seems like a no brainer, right? Wrong. I hadn’t started planning out content until January. Sure, I had a basic idea of the posts I wanted to do but I didn’t kept track of them or the ideas I had. Now, I plan all of my content and put it in my physical planner. If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I publish on Monday and Friday, and I utilize those days in my planner to plan content and photoshoots.
I tend to plan photoshoots a few days before publishing, as pictures tend to go in last. I write the content 2-3 days before the post goes up – but, sometimes it’s not done until publishing day and that’s okay!
Even though it may seem like my organization skills are all over the place, this is how I balance blogging and school. Whether you have already worked something out, or you’re looking for tips, I hope this has helped!
