How I Prepare for Back to School

I’ll say this now, and I’ll (probably) say it again later. Fall is my favorite season. One of the reasons I’m obsessed with this colorful time of the year is because the beginning of fall also brings the beginning of school. And, call me a nerd, but I love school. Though I probably spend a little too much time prepping for classes, I like to be prepared in every way possible. I tend to do these 4 things before classes start.

Fill out my planner.

I typically purchase a planner in mid-August, and start filling it out with class times and important dates. While this may seem super early to do so, I like to know what my schedule will look like and how busy I’ll be. I typically opt for a smaller, hand-size planner but this year I opted for a large, hour-by-hour planner so I can really get organized.

Organize notebooks, folders, etc.

College can be tricky, we all know that. But one way to make classes (and life) a little less stressful is to organize, organize, organize. I like to have 1 folder and 1 notebook per class. This makes it easy to take notes + store all of the important papers that I’ll get throughout the semester in one easy to find place.

Check out all of my classrooms.

Okay, this one isn’t always necessary, but if I have a class in a new building or somewhere unfamiliar, I like to check out the space before the first day. This ensures that I won’t be aimlessly wandering the hallways with a confused look on my face. I’ll be confident and know exactly where to go.

Find (and prep) meal/snack recipes.

Who doesn’t like to save some money here and there? The easiest way I’ve found to save a few dollars is to bring my own lunch and snacks to classes. I like to find easy recipes that can be eaten cold or reheated, and that doesn’t take up a whole Sunday doing meal-prep! I find a lot of these recipes via but I also like to make some of my fav foods (Annie’s mac & cheese, protein balls, rice) ahead of time.

Purchase unlimited stationery.

You wouldn’t believe me if I told you how many pens/pencils/highlighters/post-its/etc. I own. But, and this is the truth, there’s nothing better than buying (and using) a brand new gel pen or luxurious highlighter. I’m aware that I can obsess over my stationary, but I like to be prepared and have a color for everything. With that being said, I usually purchase 2 packs of the InkJoy colored pens, a 12-pack of sticky notes, a huge pack of mechanical pencils, and a few different colors of highlighters.

Trust me, while this may seem completely overwhelming now, you’ll be thanking me later. And, if it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay! My flow, may not be yours. You’ve got to find your own flow and go with it.
