Travel Packing Guide: How to Maximize Suitcase Space

Raise your hand if you struggle with packing your suitcase 🙋 I know, the struggle is real. When you’re deciding what you need to pack, how many outfits to bring and saving space for souvenirs, it seems pretty much impossible to efficiently pack a suitcase.

I’ve never checked a bag — I’m not trying to pay extra for my luggage to get thrown around! So, I always pack a carry-on. Which means I’ve learned how to be very effective + efficient when it comes to maximizing suitcase space. I want to share these tips with my favorite people (AKA you!) so I’ve compiled all of my handy tips into this travel packing guide!

Tip 1: Restyle Clothing

Okay, sure, this sounds a little weird. But, I’m not talking about outfit repeating!! Pack only one pair of jeans/leggings, instead of 2-3 alike pairs. This goes for sweaters too! You don’t need to bring 2-3 different sweaters/sweatshirts. Instead, find out how to restyle them with different jewelry or shoes. You can save so much space by not packing so many alike items. Plus, you’ll also have less to unpack and wash when you get home.

Tip 2: Roll Your Clothes

I can’t stress this enough but rolling your clothes saves so much space. It’s insane! Rolling your clothes is such a simple task that goes such a long way. Pretty much everything — from your jeans to your tops to your swimsuits — can be rolled. This also saves clothing from wrinkles!

Along with rolling individual items, I’ve found that rolling outfits together works just as great!

Tip 3: Use A Packing Guide

Tops, bottoms, dresses, shorts, shoes… The list goes on and on. Personally, when I pack, I tend to bring my whole wardrobe (not actually, but it sure feels like it!) That’s why I always use a packing guide when picking out what to bring. This way, I never forget important items (like phone chargers!) and I remember things that I probably wouldn’t have without a guide (like sunscreen!)

I’ve put together my own personal packing guide, which has everything I tend to bring on trips. Feel free to use this for your own trips!

Tip #4: Only Bring Essentials

Now, this is something that even I struggle with. I tend to bring at least 3 pairs of shoes on every trip, even though I don’t really need to. By not packing some of these things you’d want to bring and only packing the essentials, you’ll be saving tons of space! The same goes for makeup, accessories and clothes. Instead of bringing 3-4 lipstick shades, stick to 1-2. Try packing the things you truly need, and your suitcase will have much more space.

It’s a nightmare isn’t it – trying to fit it all in. I’m astounded by what my wife deems ‘essential’ even on trips within England – especially for holidays.

Airlines also reduce the size of carry-on luggage, as they try and get you to pay to put your case in the hold.

Great tips indeed. So, how long can you go away for with just ‘hand-luggage’ ?!??

It really is – it feels impossible to fit it all in! So far, I’ve lasted about a week (give or take 2-3 days) on a carry-on, but that’s also the longest trip I’ve taken! Glad you enjoyed this post!

      Xoxo, Hailey
