21 Things I Learned by 21

Y’all, I mean it when I say I thought this day would never come… It seems to have taken forever to get here, BUT I’m finally 21!! Honestly, I’m just excited to be able to go into restaurants past 10 p.m., go to more concerts and brewery events. I’ve learned so much in my 21 years, and I want to share that with you. With that being said, I’m still not done learning… But here’s my biggest takeaways thus far.

  1. Move on from the little things. Life is too short to be upset. Ask yourself, if you had $86,400 and someone stole $10, are you going to throw away the other $86,390 in hopes of getting back at someone else? Or are you going to move on and live your life? There’s 86,400 seconds in one day. Don’t let someone’s 10 negative seconds ruin the other 86,390. Life’s bigger than that.
  2. Follow your passions. Hello! You’re currently reading my passion. There’s more to life than just work. Once you find what you’re passionate about, stick with it (even if others think it’s silly). In the end, all that matters is whether you’re happy with how you’re living your life. Not anyone else’s.
  3. Take risks. This might be the hardest lesson of all, because taking risks is scary. But, in the end, you’re going to come out a winner and better for it. If you don’t go for it, what else are you doing?
  4. Buy the dang coffee. You’ll always here people telling you not to spend the $5 on a latte. I’m telling you to do it. Yeah, maybe you’re out $5. But I bet you’re going to be in a better mood, and in the long run, happier. Just buy the coffee, seriously.
  5. Don’t let other peoples successes define your life. Maybe your friends are getting promoted faster than you are. Perhaps your sibling is making more money than you. There’s always going to be someone who is achieving more than you, but that doesn’t mean that your achievements don’t matter. You shouldn’t compare yourself to anyone, because at least you’re doing what you love (I hope).
  6. Go with your gut. This is something I’ve been told since I was little, but going with what feels right is always the best. Whether it’s something as little as choosing an outfit or something as large as accepting a job offer, the best thing to do is trust yourself.
  7. Say yes. Okay, let me preface this… I don’t mean to always say yes. What I mean is, say yes to new things, adventures, foods, places, etc. Saying yes to something out of the box will make so many exciting, good memories. And who knows? Maybe you’ll end up really enjoying something you thought you wouldn’t have.
  8. Don’t give in to peer pressure. Again, this is something I’ve been told all my life. But I’m serious. Peer pressure happens all the time as an adult. People will tell you to drink, even when you don’t want to. Maybe skip work, even though you really need the money. Whatever it is, just don’t give in. Again, stay true to yourself and go with your gut (i.e. #6)
  9. Treat yo’self. Yep, I’m serious. And yes, this is different than #4! If you’ve had a hard day or week, or you just need something to cheer yourself up, give in. Buy yourself that new jacket or go to the salon. Whatever it is, you deserve it.
  10. Don’t give up your childhood. I recently read an article that said adults without children shouldn’t be allowed in Disneyland. Um what!? Don’t let anyone say you’re “acting like a child,” because hello?? Disney movies are awesome. Legos are fun. Zoos are great!! Doing these “childish” things will keep you happy, I swear.
  11. Spend time with your family. Sometimes it’s easy to get wrapped up in other things, like work. But don’t forget to take time with your family, they’re the most important thing of all.
  12. Go on vacation. I know I’ve planned sooo many dream vacations, but guess what? I’m actually going on them. And you should too! Vacation is a time to relax, get away from the real world and explore new places. It doesn’t have to be a week or two long, 2-3 days is plenty of time for a vacation. So plan that weekend getaway!
  13. Take pride. Be prideful in who you are, what you do, who you love… Just be happy with the person that you are, because you’re amazing!
  14. Be willing to learn. Take it from this list, learning things can take years. But in the end, it’s so worth it. Whether you’re learning a life lesson (like this list) or learning something in school, be happy that you’re able to learn and take advantage of that. Never stop learning.
  15. Dance like no one is watching. Yep!! Have fun, and remember that no one cares if you dance funny, can’t sing or if you’re a little bit of an oddball. Just be yourself (and have fun doing it!!)
  16. Don’t underestimate yourself. You are powerful. You can do so much, you just cannot tell yourself that you can’t. Because YOU CAN! It’s like one of those cliche posters, “Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself.”
  17. Buy alllllll of the outfits. Want to buy a new shirt? Go for it. A whole new outfit for an event? Do it. I mean honestly, if buying clothes makes you happy (um, me!) then do it. Chances are, you’ll just be upset if you don’t do it in the long run. Plus, it’s your money. You do what you want girlfriend!
  18. Learn to cook. Yep, this is a hard one. I know a lot of people hate cooking, but once you figure out what you’re doing, it can be a lot of fun!! And if you need some inspo to get started, just pop on Masterchef Junior (seriously!)
  19. Be thankful for the little things. We’re so lucky to have so many great things in life, and a lot of people aren’t as lucky as us. Be thankful that you have a car, delicious food, extra shopping money… These may seem like little things, but they are little luxuries that not everyone has. So, be thankful.
  20. Take pictures. Okay, so I hate having my pic taken (even though I’m a blogger…) but I always feel so happy that I can look back on all the memories. For real though, you’ll regret not taking pics. So, the next time you’re mom asks for one, just do it.
  21. Have fun! Seriously, life isn’t just meant to be all about work. Stay up late, go to a midnight movie, eat all of the candy. Do what makes you happy and have fun doing it. Hang out with friends and family. Go to a bar, a nightclub, wherever you have fun. Just don’t stop ever having fun, no matter what.

If you made it this far, thank you for listening! It seriously means so much to me that I have this platform to share what I love with y’all. I feel so grateful everyday. Cheers to 21, and cheers to y’all!
